Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center (TFREC)

Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center (TFREC) is the research and extension center of Washington State University dedicated to the tree fruit sciences. Located in the primary fruit producing region of the world, the center features a cooperative, multidisciplinary approach to tree fruit production in the 21st century.

The 2007 Annual Meeting of the Washington State Horticulture Association included a session on sustainability and the footprint of fruit production. The session described the concepts of sustainability and footprints, ways to measure or evaluate them, a grower’s response to fossil fuel by adopting bio-diesel, new orchard floor management techniques, pesticide reduction strategies, and a discussion of how the Food Alliance assesses farm sustainability and links it to potential markets.
